Under a nationwide initiative to introduce innovative digital solutions, the Ministry of Transport, Highways, and Urban Development yesterday (01) launched a new digital payment program for Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) bus services.
Implemented with the guidance of the Ministry of Digital Economy, the initiative aims to further strengthen public transport services while enhancing transparency and accountability between passengers and conductors.
The project enables passengers to pay bus fares using electronic cards, offering greater convenience and efficiency. The system was officially inaugurated yesterday (01) at the Makumbura Multimodal Centre (MMC) under the patronage of SLTB Chairman Sajeewa Kanakaratne.
Passengers using electronic cards will not incur any additional charges, ensuring that the card-based payment method does not place extra financial burdens on commuters. The system also allows passengers to pay only the exact approved fare.
Authorities stated that the government plans to further refine and enhance the card payment system by assessing its strengths and addressing any shortcomings identified during the initial phase of implementation.
The pilot project commenced today on selected routes, including Makumbura–Galle and Makumbura–Embilipitiya.
The launch event was attended by Advisor to the Ministry of Digital Economy Sumudu Rathnayake, officials from People’s Bank, and several other distinguished invitees.
