The Sri Lanka Export Development Board’s (EDB) National Packaging Centre (NPC) recently conducted an awareness workshop on EU Food Labeling Legislation at the EDB premises, attracting over 110 exporters and potential exporters eager to strengthen their compliance with international market requirements.
The workshop, facilitated by Ms. Nishani Maduwanthi, Food Safety Management System Trainer and Lead Auditor at SGS Lanka (Pvt) Ltd., provided participants with in-depth guidance on EU food labeling laws, including mandatory components such as product descriptions, ingredient listings, allergen declarations, nutrition information, and quantity marking. Attendees also gained practical insights on energy calculations, permitted nutrition and health claims, and step-by-step guidance for calculating energy and reference intake (%RI) per portion or per 100g of a food product.
Established in 2023, the Packaging Design Display Unit alongside the NPC serves as Sri Lanka’s national focal point for packaging promotion and development, offering exporters the knowledge, tools, and support needed to enhance packaging standards and meet global market expectations.
Through initiatives like this workshop, the EDB continues to empower Sri Lankan exporters, promoting innovative, sustainable, and compliant packaging practices that add value to export products and strengthen readiness for international markets.
